WHAT IS A FAST?

Fasting is a way to demonstrate to God, and to ourselves, that we are serious about our relationship with Him. Fasting helps us gain a new perspective and a renewed reliance upon God. The book of Acts records believers fasting before they made important decisions (Acts 13:2; 14:23). Fasting and prayer are often linked together in scriptures (Luke 2:37; 5:33). By taking our eyes off the things of this world, we can more successfully turn our attention to Christ. Fasting is not a way to get God to do what we want – fasting changes us, not God.

WHAT AM I FASTING FROM?

We will fast primarily from food and all media (TV, non-work related internet browsing, all social media, etc.)

During the times we would normally spend eating and browsing social media we are asking that you replace that time with prayer and Bible reading. Even though you are able to eat at 6pm you are encouraged to keep social media, TV, and non-work related internet browsing off.

FASTING NOTES

For those who’ve never fasted before, we implore you to listen to not just the Lord, but also to your bodies. If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, on medication, or in any other circumstance that might make it difficult to complete the fast, please snack as necessary (fruit is an option as a compromise), and be sure to hydrate. Fasting is supposed to be challenging but please don’t put yourself in any danger.

          SCRIPTURE READING

1 Timothy 3:1-13 - “The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseermust be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, 5 for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God's church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil. Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. Their wives  be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things. Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well. For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.”
